Dermal Fillers IN NAGS HEAD, NC

Dermal Fillers

As time passes, our faces undergo various changes. We may develop lines and wrinkles, experience thinning of the lips, loss of volume, and skin sagging. Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, are non-surgical, instant solutions to these common problems. In the right hands, they are safe and effective cosmetic treatments.

At Outer Banks Dermatology, we take great care to have a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the face and the safest and most effective injection techniques. We strive to help you achieve a natural look that appears younger, more radiant, and better rested—the best version of YOU.

WHAT IS A HYALURONIC ACID DERMAL FILLER?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural sugar molecule found in our bodies. It works to help moisturize and nourish the skin, as well as provide cushioning and volume.

As we age, the level of natural hyaluronic acid in our skin dwindles due to various factors such as sun damage, the natural aging process, and genetic makeup. To address this, some people opt for HA dermal fillers, which are injectable gels made of synthetic HA that are safe for the body. These products aid in decreasing the visibility of wrinkles and fine lines and also replenish volume in areas that have lost it due to aging. HA fillers do this by taking up space and attracting water. Please note that HA fillers are the only type that is REVERSIBLE. Injected by trained, experienced medical staff, they have an excellent safety record.

TYPES OF HA DERMAL FILLERS

There are different types of fillers to correct different areas of volume depletion in the face. Juvederm (made by Allergan) and Restylane (made by Galderma) are the main two lines of HA filler that Outer Banks Dermatology utilizes. We do not inject non-HA fillers, as they cannot be reversed.

HA fillers are categorized based on the amount of cross-linking present in the particular HA gel. The more cross-linked, thicker gels (Juvederm Voluma, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Contour) are better suited for areas such as the cheeks, where greater volume depletion and more lifting action are required. Those fillers typically last up to 18 months. On the other hand, for the lips and lines around the mouth, a softer, more superficial injection is required. One would want a less cross-linked product around and in the lips for a more natural look in an area that moves quite a bit. Due to their lesser cross-linking and the movement of the lip areas, lip fillers tend to last up to one year. Both Juvederm and Restylane manufacture a variety of fillers that work beautifully in those areas. Part of your Full Face Consultation will be to determine which fillers would be most appropriate for your situation based on your anatomy, aesthetics, and preferences. Our expert medical injectors at Outer Banks Dermatology have spent years studying which filler works best where, so you can feel confident with your treatment.

Surgical excision

$60| 30 min

The skin cancer is cut out with a scalpel and the resulting wound is closed with stitches. Excision of melanomas is done with enough normal surrounding skin included to make a “margin.” The amount of “margin” recommended is based on the depth of the lesion at biopsy.

Mohs surgery

$80 | 45min

This type of skin cancer surgery is reserved for thinner melanomas, such as melanoma in- situ, especially when they are located on the head or neck. Mohs surgery requires an in-house histopathology laboratory and a physician with special training and certification in this technique. We, unfortunately, do not offer Mohs surgery at our location, but we have relationships with exceptionally competent Mohs surgeons that we can refer you to if needed.

Referral to specialists

$80 | 45min

Due to the seriousness of the diagnosis of melanoma and the possibility of spread, we have a low threshold for referral to local general surgeons, to Mohs surgeons, and/or to cancer centers such as Duke, UNC-CH or EVMS/Sentara for additional evaluation and management. At times, further investigation may be required through analysis of lymph nodes, blood tests, or imaging procedures like MRIs, CTs, and PET scans.

FAQs

Injectable wrinkle fillers plump the skin by filling in space underneath the wrinkles or relaxing the muscles that deepen wrinkles.

The injections use collagen, hyaluronic acid, body fat, or another substance to lift the skin and fill creases. As a result, they leave you with a more youthful appearance.

Cosmetic fillers improve facial skin in numerous ways, including:
  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles (crow’s feet, laugh lines, eyebrow furrows, and forehead creases)
  • Dissolve chin fat
  • Fill in the cheeks and lips
  • Reduce the appearance of acne scars

The experts at Outer Banks Dermatology have the training, expertise, and licensing necessary to administer the following fillers:
  • KYBELLA®: deoxycholic acid reduces fat under the chin; results are permanent
  • Juvéderm Voluma® XC, Juvéderm® XC, Juvéderm® Ultra XC, Juvéderm Volbella® XC: cheek, face, and lip fillers made of hyaluronic acid; lasts up to one year
  • Restylane Refyne®, Restylane Defyne®, Restylane Silk®, Restylane Lyft®: cheek, face, and lip fillers made of hyaluronic acid; lasts up to one year
  • BOTOX®: purified botulinum toxins relax facial muscles to reduce wrinkles; lasts up to four months
  • Dysport®: the acetylcholine release inhibitor relaxes muscles between the brows; results last up to four month

Cosmetic fillers provide a minimally invasive solution for aging skin. They’re a great alternative to more complicated surgical procedures and produce natural-looking results.

Another benefit of cosmetic fillers is that they result in virtually no downtime and minimal side effects. You may experience some mild temporary swelling or discomfort after getting fillers, but the side effects dissipate quickly.

The treatments themselves are also relatively painless. You may feel a slight pinch when the needle enters the skin, but it feels no different than getting a shot and can be alleviated with topical or local anesthetics.

It’s essential to discuss your treatment goals with Dr. Glover. Each filler targets a different area, lasts a certain amount of time, and uses various ingredients so you may want to consider all those factors before choosing your treatment approach.
