What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that’s primarily used to minimize the signs of aging.
During a standard session, a device with small needles is used to prick the skin and stimulate new collagen production. Because of this, microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy or percutaneous collagen induction. It has the added benefit of creating small micro-channels that allow deeper penetration of products that improve the skin.
Traditional microneedling is used for the improvement of many skin conditions: from age spots, wrinkles and fine lines, dull skin, to scarring and certain forms of hyperpigmentation.
Microneedling is a quick process compared to other cosmetic procedures, with very little downtime.

What to expect during your appointment?
Before
The area being treated is first cleaned and disinfected. A topical numbing cream is applied for 15 minutes which ensures the patient is comfortable during the procedure.
During
A syringe of blood will be drawn, usually from your arm, while your face is numbing. The blood is then put into a centrifuge, which separates the PRP from other components of the blood.
The actual procedure involves two steps. The PRP solution is first applied to the desired treatment area with the microneedling being performed after. The microneedling portion lasts about 30 minutes, depending on the areas treated. The microneedling treatment creates small controlled micropunctures in the skin, allowing for penetration of the PRP and production of collagen.
After
Once the procedure is finished, serum or balm may be applied to help soothe any redness and irritation. The redness and irritation usually resemble that of mild a sunburn. Patients are encouraged to limit sun exposure and make up application for at least 48 hours post-treatment.
Potential side effects and complications?
Bruises and inflammation, including swelling and redness, can occur but are rare. They typically appear immediately after the procedure and clear within four to six days. The chances of this happening can be greatly reduced by avoiding aspirin and NSAIDS for at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your treatment.
You’ll also want to avoid sun exposure and harsh skin treatments during this time. It’s important that you don’t rub or pick at your face. Sun protection is also very important.
The good news is that PRP contains your own blood, so there’s little chance of cross-contamination or infection. Rare, but serious, complications include infection and scarring.
If you have a history of herpes simplex or cold sores, it’s also possible that you may have an outbreak from having this procedure done. Let your healthcare provider know if you’ve ever had cold sores and oral medication can be prescribed to help prevent them.”
